Effects of hydrogen sulfide on mitochondrial function and cellular bioenergetics

Bindu D. Paul et al.

Summary: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was once thought to be only toxic, but is now known to also act as an endogenous signaling molecule. The effects of H2S on cellular physiology are dose-dependent, with lower concentrations being beneficial and higher concentrations being cytotoxic. In particular, H2S has contrasting effects on mitochondrial function, inhibiting the electron transport chain at higher concentrations and stimulating bioenergetics at lower concentrations.

The prognostic implications of perioperative endogenous hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide levels in children with congenital heart disease complicated by pulmonary arterial hypertension

Yanling Tan et al.

Summary: Endogenous hydrogen sulfide and nitric oxide levels are closely associated with CHD-PAH incidence, and there is a correlation between endogenous hydrogen sulfide levels and the postoperative prognosis of CHD in children. Higher hydrogen sulfide concentrations seem to correspond to better patient prognosis, serving as an early prognostic index, and guiding treatment efforts to improve outcomes among children with CHD-PAH.

The H2S-generating enzyme 3-mercaptopyruvate sulfurtransferase regulates pulmonary vascular smooth muscle cell migration and proliferation but does not impact normal or aberrant lung development

Ettore Lignelli et al.

Summary: Nitric oxide, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen sulfide gasotransmitters are playing important roles in newborn physiology, diseases, and therapies. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of hydrogen sulfide in animal models of bronchopulmonary dysplasia, where exogenous hydrogen sulfide was found to mitigate the impact of oxygen toxicity on lung development. Additionally, research has shown that hydrogen sulfide is directly generated by three enzymes, with potential therapeutic implications for lung development and pulmonary vascular physiology.

Hydrogen sulfide as a novel biomarker of asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease

Summary: Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is recognized as the third important gas-signaling molecule, with dual effects of anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, but potentially pro-inflammatory under certain conditions. In respiratory disorders, H2S has shown promise as a novel biomarker for predicting asthma risks and identifying inflammatory phenotypes for personalized treatment.
