COVID-19 in Health-Care Workers: A Living Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Prevalence, Risk Factors, Clinical Characteristics, and Outcomes

Sergio Alejandro Gomez-Ochoa et al.

Summary: Health-care workers have an 11% prevalence of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with nurses being the most affected personnel, mainly working in hospital nonemergency wards. 40% of HCWs infected with COVID-19 were asymptomatic at the time of diagnosis, while 5% developed severe complications and 0.5% died.

Is extensive cardiopulmonary screening useful in athletes with previous asymptomatic or mild SARS-CoV-2 infection?

Salvatore Francesco Gervasi et al.

Summary: In this small cohort of athletes with previous asymptomatic/mild SARS-CoV-2 infection, a comprehensive screening protocol including blood tests, spirometry, resting ECG, stress-test ECG with oxygen saturation monitoring and echocardiogram did not identify relevant anomalies. While larger studies are needed, extensive cardiorespiratory and haematological screening in athletes with asymptomatic/mild SARS-CoV-2 infection appears unnecessary.

Sudden Unexpected Death Due to Myocarditis in Young People, Including Athletes

Kevin M. Harris et al.

Summary: Myocarditis is an important but under-recognized cause of sudden death in young active individuals, including athletes. Diagnosis is challenging due to nonspecific symptoms that are often ignored, requiring a high index of suspicion. Research supports the removal of individuals with myocarditis from competitive sports during recovery.

Autonomic dysfunction in 'long COVID': rationale, physiology and management strategies

Melanie Dani et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has caused unprecedented morbidity, mortality, and disruption, with a new syndrome known as 'long COVID' emerging among survivors. This syndrome, characterized by debilitating symptoms like breathlessness and palpitations, may be related to autonomic nervous system disruption post-infection. Physicians should recognize and support individuals with 'long COVID' symptoms, with a focus on managing the underlying impaired autonomic physiology.

Pulmonary function and radiological features 4 months after COVID-19: first results from the national prospective observational Swiss COVID-19 lung study

Sabina A. Guler et al.

Summary: The Swiss COVID-19 lung study investigated pulmonary sequelae of COVID-19 in 113 survivors. Severe/critical COVID-19 was associated with significant functional and radiological abnormalities 4 months after infection, potentially due to small-airway and lung parenchymal disease. Systematic follow-up for survivors needs to be evaluated to optimize care for patients recovering from COVID-19.

SARS-CoV-2 Cardiac Involvement in Young Competitive Athletes

Nathaniel Moulson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence and clinical implications of COVID-19 cardiac involvement in young competitive athletes in the United States. The results showed a low prevalence of cardiac involvement and a low risk of clinical events in short-term follow-up among these athletes.

Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome

Ani Nalbandian et al.

Summary: SARS-CoV-2 is responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic, causing global healthcare crises. Recovery from COVID-19 may lead to persistent symptoms and long-term complications, prompting the need for multidisciplinary care and follow-up for survivors.

3-month, 6-month, 9-month, and 12-month respiratory outcomes in patients following COVID-19-related hospitalisation: a prospective study

Xiaojun Wu et al.

Summary: Most patients recovering from severe COVID-19 showed improvement in dyspnoea scores and exercise capacity over time, but a subgroup of patients still exhibited persistent physiological and radiographic changes at 12 months post-discharge. A unified pathway for respiratory follow-up is needed for COVID-19 patients.

Prevalence of Clinical and Subclinical Myocarditis in Competitive Athletes With Recent SARS-CoV-2 Infection Results From the Big Ten COVID-19 Cardiac Registry

Curt J. Daniels et al.

Summary: In this study of 1597 competitive athletes in the US who underwent CMR screening after COVID-19 infection, 37 athletes (2.3%) were diagnosed with clinical and subclinical myocarditis. There was variability in prevalence across universities, and testing protocols were closely associated with the detection of myocarditis. The unique CMR imaging data highlight the need for standardized timing and interpretation of cardiac testing for safe return to play in athletes.

Aetiology and incidence of sudden cardiac arrest and death in young competitive athletes in the USA: a 4-year prospective study

Danielle F. Peterson et al.

Summary: The study investigated the causes and incidence of sudden cardiac arrest and death (SCAM) in US competitive athletes through prospective surveillance from 2014 to 2018. Cardiomyopathies accounted for nearly half of the SCA/D cases in college and professional athletes, while coronary artery anomalies played a more prominent role in middle school athletes than expected. Over half of SCA cases in athletes resulted in sudden death, indicating a need for improved prevention strategies.
