Loss of Taste and Smell as Distinguishing Symptoms of Coronavirus Disease 2019

Patrick Dawson et al.

Summary: In a household study, loss of taste and/or smell was the fourth most reported symptom among COVID-19 case patients, and had the highest positive predictive value among household contacts. Olfactory and taste dysfunctions should be considered for COVID-19 case identification and testing prioritization.

Olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions due to the coronavirus disease (COVID-19): a review of current evidence

Esmaeil Mehraeen et al.

Summary: Studies have shown a significant increase in olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions during the COVID-19 epidemic. Most studies (95.8%) have confirmed symptoms of anosmia in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection, along with evidence of ageusia and dysgeusia in patients with COVID-19. The findings support reports that SARS-CoV-2 may infect oral and nasal tissues, leading to olfactory and gustatory dysfunctions.

The cytokine storm and COVID-19

Biying Hu et al.

Summary: COVID-19, caused by SARS-CoV-2, has become a global pandemic since its emergence in Wuhan, China, in December 2019, posing a serious threat to public health. Close contact and respiratory droplets are the main modes of transmission. The cytokine storm is closely associated with disease severity and mortality, emphasizing the importance of studying and treating the cytokine storm in COVID-19.

Summary: This study found that critically ill Covid-19 patients presented with an acute cytokine response upon admission, with correlations between respiratory failure, acute kidney injury, and 30-day mortality. Cytokine expression, particularly IL-8, showed a strong association with mortality outcomes in Covid-19 patients.

Summary: The study found that during the COVID-19 lockdown, subjective cognitive functioning and mental health were severely impacted, particularly in routine tasks involving attention, temporal orientation, and executive functions related to the lockdown. There was a paradoxical effect in memory, with reduced forgetfulness compared to pre-lockdown. Risk factors for worsening cognition and mental health included being female, under 45 years, working from home, or underemployed.

Post-COVID Syndrome: An Insight on Its Pathogenesis

Helena C. Maltezou et al.

Summary: Post-COVID syndrome is recognized as a new clinical entity in the context of SARS-CoV-2 infection, with symptoms persisting for more than three weeks after COVID-19 diagnosis. The pathogenesis is multifactorial, with mechanisms such as prolonged inflammation and immune-mediated dysfunction implicated. Currently lacking a consensus on classification, further research is crucial to understand the full spectrum of clinical manifestations and long-term outcomes.
