Innovations to culturing the uncultured microbial majority

William H. Lewis et al.

Summary: The review emphasizes the importance of culturing microorganisms to complement genomic data. Despite the abundance of microbial genome data, experimental testing is crucial to confirm hypotheses about cell biology, ecological roles, and evolution. Culturing remains a priority as the majority of archaeal and bacterial diversity remains uncultured and poorly understood. Advances in efficient cultivation strategies have been driven by a growing interest in and need for cultivating novel microorganisms.

Codon usage bias and environmental adaptation in microbial organisms

Davide Arella et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between codon usage bias, microbial lifestyles, and habitats in 615 microbial organisms. The results showed that species with similar phenotypic traits living in similar environmental conditions exhibit similar codon preferences and tRNA availability. Additionally, organisms able to live in multiple habitats have reduced translational efficiency.
