CNS implications of COVID-19: a comprehensive review

Priyanka Nagu et al.

Summary: Infection with COVID-19 can lead to damage to the central nervous system, causing long-term complications. The virus can enter the CNS through various routes, inducing CNS inflammation and neurological damage. Close monitoring of the CNS involvement of COVID-19 is crucial to prevent long-term complications even after recovery.

Altered alcohol consumption during COVID-19 pandemic lockdown

Julius Steffen et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 lockdown measures have significantly impacted alcohol consumption behaviors in adults, showing noticeable differences between young and mature adults. Moderate drinkers in both age groups experienced the most pronounced changes in alcohol intake. Female sex, low BMI, and younger age were associated with a decrease in self-reported drinks per week. Further research is needed to explore potential long-term effects of alcohol misuse and its impact on public health.

Relation among Perceived Weight Change, Sedentary Activities and Sleep Quality during COVID-19 Lockdown: A Study in an Academic Community in Northern Italy

Margherita Micheletti Cremasco et al.

Summary: The study conducted in Italy during the COVID-19 lockdown period found that 43.3% of participants perceived weight gain, with sedentary individuals experiencing more significant increases and workers with higher BMI experiencing more substantial weight gain. Additionally, over 45% reported worsened sleep quality, which was associated with perceived weight gain. Tailored interventions promoting health-related behaviors during lockdowns were deemed crucial based on the study's findings.

COVID-19 Lockdown and the Behavior Change on Physical Exercise, Pain and Psychological Well-Being: An International Multicentric Study

Anelise Sonza et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdown on physical exercise, pain, and psychological well-being among populations in 6 countries. Results indicated that the Brazilian sample was most influenced by the pandemic, with Italy showing the most significant changes. Predictors for the non-practice of physical exercise during social isolation included country, smoking, social isolation, and physical exercise level. Public health strategies are recommended to prevent sedentary lifestyles and decrease in quality of life.

Post-viral effects of COVID-19 in the olfactory system and their implications

Michael S. Xydakis et al.

Summary: COVID-19 is often associated with olfactory dysfunction, providing a research opportunity to study the natural course of this neurological finding. However, limited by sample sizes and lack of advanced neuroimaging data, there is still a substantial gap in knowledge regarding the mechanisms of olfactory impairment. Persistent olfactory deficits post-SARS-CoV-2 infection could potentially be a marker for increased long-term risk of neurological disease.

Puberty,A Sensitive Window of Hypothalamic Development and Plasticity

Lydie Naule et al.

Summary: Puberty is a developmental period marked by complex changes in the central nervous system and hormonal cascades to achieve adult sexual and reproductive maturity. A finely regulated neural network overseeing the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis ensures the activation of gonads and hormone secretion, leading to puberty initiation. The involvement of various neurotransmitters, neurohormones, and glial cells in this process highlights the intricate mechanisms behind the maturation of neuroendocrine functions during puberty.
