Investigation of in vitro behavior of plasma sprayed Ti, TiO2 and HA coatings on PEEK

Fatih Sargin et al.

Summary: Orthopedic implants are widely used in modern medicine to enhance the quality of human life, with PEEK emerging as a high-performance alternative to metallic implants. Coating PEEK implants with bioactive materials such as HA has been shown to improve their bioactivity and osteointegration behavior, effectively addressing the shortcomings of PEEK's biological inertness and low bioactivity.

Enhancing CF/PEEK interfacial adhesion by modified PEEK grafted with carbon nanotubes

Hanxiong Lyu et al.

Summary: The interfacial adhesion between carbon fiber (CF) and polyetheretherketone (PEEK) was improved by modifying the interface with hydroxylated PEEK grafted onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes. The modified CFs showed increased surface roughness, more polar groups, decreased contact angle, and increased surface energy, leading to enhanced wettability and improved physical adhesion, resulting in significant enhancements in the mechanical properties of the CF/PEEK composites.

Improving bioactivity and strength of PEEK composite polymer for bone application

Bankole Oladapo et al.

Summary: The study created a new composite material using PEEK, cHAp, and rGO to improve biocompatibility and mimic bone structure with different lattice porous structures. The results indicated that the composite with 5% rGO showed higher biocompatibility and mechanical strength, and the addition of rGO significantly increased the Young's modulus and bulk modulus of PEEK.

Enhancing antibacterial capability and osseointegration of polyetheretherketone (PEEK) implants by dual-functional surface modification

Chengzhe Gao et al.

Summary: The study successfully developed a dual-functional PEEK implant surface that can simultaneously resist bacterial contamination and promote osseointegration by releasing MOX and OGP. The surface exhibited excellent antibacterial effects against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli, and significantly enhanced cell adhesion, proliferation, and osteogenicity. Animal models confirmed the in vivo antimicrobial and osteogenesis abilities of the dual-functional PEEK surface.
