Effect of tool geometry in dissimilar Al-Steel Friction Stir Welding

Pankaj Kaushik et al.

Summary: The fusion of Aluminum and Steel materials presents benefits but also challenges due to their different properties. Solid-state joining processes like friction stir welding prevent the formation of thick intermetallic layers in the joint. Careful control of process parameters and tool geometry is crucial for successful welding, and optimizing tool shape and size based on heat generation can lead to strong and reliable weld joints.

Summary: The study investigated the formation of intermetallic compounds and material mixing during friction stir lap welding of aluminum and brass through experimental and simulation methods. Results showed the presence of distinct zones with different intermetallic characteristics, and increasing tool traverse speed significantly reduced inter-material mixing while restricting the formation of intermetallic phases.

Enhancements on Dissimilar Friction Stir Welding Between AZ31 and SPHC Mild Steel With Al-Mg as Powder Additives

Mohd Ridha bin Muhamad et al.

Summary: Friction stir welding between AZ31 magnesium alloy and SPHC mild steel with Al-Mg powder additives resulted in a significant enhancement of tensile strength, with the loss of aluminum in the alloy compensated by the addition of the powder. The well mixed and dispersed Al-Mg powder at the joint interface at a welding speed of 50 mm/min contributed to the welding strength by forming intermetallic compounds.

Corrosion Resistance of Aluminum-Copper Alloys with Different Grain Structures

Alejandra S. Roman et al.

Summary: Electrochemical studies and microstructure analysis were conducted on directionally solidified hypoeutectic and eutectic aluminum-copper alloys. The addition of copper in the alloys was found to increase the corrosion susceptibility due to the formation of cathodic sites, while an increase in the concentration of Al2Cu intermetallic compound resulted in higher corrosion susceptibility. The morphology of the microstructure played a crucial role in enhancing the corrosion resistance of the Al-Cu alloys.

Summary: Butt friction stir welding was conducted between pure copper and AA5754 alloy, with reinforcing SiC nanoparticles used to reduce harmful effects of intermetallic compounds. Tensile tests, micro-hardness experiments, scanning electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction analysis were applied to study the properties of welded joints, with the best results seen using a travel speed of 50 mm/min and a rotation speed of 1000 r/min. The presence of nano-sized SiC particles led to reduced grain size in the stir zone, and significantly increased tensile strength and microhardness of the weld zone.
