Temporal patterns of iron limitation in the Ross Sea as determined from chlorophyll fluorescence

Thomas J. Ryan-Keogh et al.

Summary: The Ross Sea is a highly productive region in the Southern Ocean, with a well-established seasonal cycle of phytoplankton progression linked to iron availability. A novel technique using NPQ(Glider) as a proxy for iron limitation was applied to a glider time series, revealing four stages of surface chlorophyll concentrations. High NPQ(Glider) levels and low alpha(NPQ) values indicate a potential transition from a Phaeocystis antarctica bloom to a non-iron limited diatom bloom, showcasing the importance of innovative methodologies in understanding biogeochemical cycles in the ocean.

Characterization of phytoplankton productivity and bio-optical variability in a polar marine ecosystem

Summary: Understanding of Southern Ocean carbon cycling is hindered by lack of data on phytoplankton primary productivity (PP) and spectral absorption, but this study in the Indian Sector of the Southern Ocean (ISSO) has provided insights into the link between these factors. The findings underscore the importance of regional-specific algorithm modifications for accurate assessment of PP and highlight the need for improvements in satellite-based models to capture bio-optical variability in the region.
