Chitosan-Coated Surgical Sutures Prevent Adherence and Biofilms of Mixed Microbial Communities

Subramani Prabha et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that chitosan extracted from crab shells could effectively prevent the colonization of bacterial and fungal pathogens at surgical sites, showing better performance compared to commercial chitosan. The chitosan-coated sutures not only inhibited the growth of bacteria and fungi, but also prevented hyphal formation, reducing invasiveness.

New insights into the cellular mechanism of triclosan-induced dermal toxicity from a combined metabolomic and lipidomic approach

Yanshan Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to TCS led to elevation of purine and glutathione metabolism, down-regulation of amino acid metabolism, and dysregulation of lipid metabolism in human HaCaT keratinocytes. As a result, overproduction of reactive oxygen species and accumulation of ammonia occurred, contributing to oxidative stress and inflammation related to cell apoptosis.

Acute Toxicity and DNA Instability Induced by Exposure to Low Doses of Triclosan and Phthalate DEHP, and Their Combinations, in vitro

Nathalia de Assis Aguilar Duarte et al.

Summary: The study found that TCS and DEHP can induce acute toxicity and DNA damage in human cells. Treatment with TCS and DEHP separately showed clear mutagenic effects on cells, but no combined effects were observed when cells were exposed to TCS + DEHP. On the other hand, the combination of the two toxicants significantly increased the frequencies of apoptotic and necrotic cells, as well as induced alterations of biomarkers related to cell viability.
