Inconsistencies and Lurking Pitfalls in the Magnitude-Frequency Distribution of High-Resolution Earthquake Catalogs

Marcus Herrmann et al.

Summary: This study investigates if the magnitude-frequency distribution (MFD) of high-resolution earthquake catalogs can be extrapolated straightforwardly to an exponential-like distribution, and finds that high-resolution catalogs usually do not preserve the exponential-like MFD toward low magnitudes. These departures are mainly due to improper mixing of different magnitude types, spatiotemporal inhomogeneous completeness, or biased data recording or processing.

B-Positive: A Robust Estimator of Aftershock Magnitude Distribution in Transiently Incomplete Catalogs

Nicholas J. van der Elst

Summary: The earthquake magnitude-frequency distribution is described by the b-value, which can be used to distinguish foreshock sequences and aftershock sequences, but measuring b-value in active aftershock sequences is biased. A new b-value estimator, b-positive, has been developed to improve the robustness of b-value measurements during active earthquake sequences, based on positive-only differences in magnitude between successive earthquakes.

Upper Mantle Anisotropic Shear Velocity Structure at the Equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge Constrained by Rayleigh Wave Group Velocity Analysis From the PI-LAB Experiment

Utpal Saikia et al.

Summary: This study provides high-resolution imaging of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, revealing slower velocities around the ridge and faster velocities beneath older seafloor, along with complex patterns of anisotropy. The evolution of lithosphere suggests conductive cooling, small-scale convection, and partial melting processes.

A thin mantle transition zone beneath the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge

Matthew R. Agius et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that seismic discontinuities in the mantle transition zone appear to thin, consistent with slow shear-wave velocities in the mantle. Beneath the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, seismic velocities in the mantle transition zone are on average slower than those beneath older Atlantic Ocean seafloor. These observations suggest that material transfer from the lower to the upper mantle is linked to the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Shear Velocity Inversion Guided by Resistivity Structure From the PI-LAB Experiment for Integrated Estimates of Partial Melt in the Mantle

Nicholas Harmon et al.

Summary: The researchers reexamined the lithosphere-asthenosphere boundary near the equatorial Mid-Atlantic Ridge and proposed a new velocity and resistivity model based on combining seismic and electromagnetic methods. They found that melt plays a significant role in the models and affects the properties of the system.

Seismicity trends and detachment fault structure at 13°N, Mid-Atlantic Ridge

R. Parnell-Turner et al.

Summary: At slow-spreading ridges, plate separation is partly accommodated by long-lived detachment faults, with two adjacent faults mechanically decoupled and showing high seismicity levels. Linear seismic activity bands indicate magmatism and suggest previously unobserved stress accumulation and release cycles in oceanic detachments.
