High pressure partitioning behavior of Mo and W and late sulfur delivery during Earth's core formation

Dongyang Huang et al.

Summary: Experimental and modeling studies on the partitioning behavior of Mo and W between the mantle and metal shed light on the effects of pressure, temperature, and metal composition, revealing profound impacts on their distribution. Oxygen enhances the solubility of Mo and W in the metal, while sulfur makes W less siderophile compared to Mo. Late sulfur supply to the Earth can explain the abundance of Mo and W in the mantle, supporting heterogeneous accretion models.

Summary: Researchers used numerical models to investigate how the evolution of the solar protoplanetary disk affected the timing of protoplanet formation and their internal evolution, resulting in two distinct bursts of planetesimal formation from different source regions, leading to different volatile contents in the inner and outer Solar System.

Earth's volatile accretion as told by Cd, Bi, Sb and Tl core-mantle distribution

E. Kubik et al.

Summary: The behavior of Cd, Bi, Sb, and Tl in metal-silicate equilibrium under high pressure and temperature conditions was studied in this research. The partitioning coefficients of these elements are mainly controlled by changes in temperature, pressure, oxygen fugacity, and the sulfur content of the metal phase. A scenario in which volatile elements are accreted in the last 10-20 % of Earth's accretion process was suggested as the most suitable explanation for the abundances of these elements in Earth's mantle.
