Historic Yangtze flooding of 2020 tied to extreme Indian Ocean conditions

Zhen-Qiang Zhou et al.

Summary: The record strong Indian Ocean Dipole event in 2019 played a key role in the severe flooding of the Yangtze River in 2020 by deepening the thermocline and warming the Indian Ocean. This led to anomalous anticyclone in the lower troposphere over the Indo-Northwest Pacific region and intensified the upper-level westerly jet over East Asia, causing heavy summer rainfall in the Yangtze Basin.

The Record-breaking Meiyu in 2020 and Associated Atmospheric Circulation and Tropical SST Anomalies

Yihui Ding et al.

Summary: The record-breaking meiyu season in the Yangtze-Huaihe River valley in 2020 was characterized by long duration, abundant precipitation, and frequent heavy rainstorm processes, closely associated with a significant quasi-biweekly oscillation in the East Asian monsoon circulation system.

Toward Understanding the Extreme Floods over Yangtze River Valley in June-July 2020: Role of Tropical Oceans

Shaolei Tang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the extreme floods in the Middle/Lower Yangtze River Valley during June-July 2020, finding a strong connection to an anomalous anticyclone over the western North Pacific and warm SST conditions in the tropical Indian Ocean. The multi-decadal warming trend and interannual variability of the Indian Ocean SSTs had positive impacts on the extreme floods.

A Common Base Mode of Asian Summer Monsoon Variability across Timescales

Xudong Wang et al.

Summary: The summer intraseasonal oscillation in the Indo-western Pacific warm pool region is characterized by a northward-moving rainband. The physical origin of this phenomenon is not fully understood due to strong interaction of convection and circulation. Results of the study suggest that the tropical northwest Pacific anomalous anticyclone (NWP-AAC) plays a key role on both intraseasonal and interannual time scales, influenced by monsoon dynamics and sea surface temperature anomalies.
