Elevated plasma levels of D-serine in some patients with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis

Aven Lee et al.

Summary: Plasma D-serine levels in ALS patients are significantly higher compared to healthy controls, with around 43% of patients having levels 2 to 4 times higher. There was no association between plasma D-serine levels and disability, duration of disease, or age of the subjects.

Acute D-Serine Co-Agonism of β-Cell NMDA Receptors Potentiates Glucose-Stimulated Insulin Secretion and Excitatory β-Cell Membrane Activity

Summary: The study suggests that D-serine has acute antidiabetic effects in mice by potentiating insulin secretion. In vivo experiments showed that D-serine can enhance glucose-stimulated insulin secretion, dependent on the activation conditions of NMDAR.

Impairment of Executive Functions Associated With Lower D-Serine Serum Levels in Patients With Schizophrenia

Jaromir Hons et al.

Summary: Schizophrenic patients show significantly reduced levels of D-serine in their blood serum, and increasing D-serine levels can improve cognitive functionality. These findings suggest a correlation between D-serine levels and impairment in executive functioning.

Relationship of Brain Glutamate Response to D-Cycloserine and Lurasidone to Antidepressant Response in Bipolar Depression: A Pilot Study

Zhengchao Dong et al.

Summary: This study assessed the impact of D-cycloserine combined with lurasidone on glutamate and Glx in bipolar disorder depression, finding that the change in glutamate levels correlated negatively with improvement in depression severity. These preliminary pilot results suggest a link between antidepressant effects and decreased glutamate levels by NMDAR antagonists.

N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor hyperfunction contributes to o-serine-mediated renal insufficiency

Yi-Shiou Tseng et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that NMDAR blockade alleviates D-serine-induced renal injury, possibly through the involvement of NOX4-mediated oxidative stress. These findings have important implications for preventing acute renal injury caused by D-serine.
