Clinical practice guidelines for radiofrequency ablation of benign thyroid nodules: a systematic review

Minkyoung Lee et al.

Summary: This study compared guidelines for thyroid radiofrequency ablation from different scientific societies and identified similarities and differences. While there are commonalities in major aspects among the guidelines reviewed, there is a need for establishing international guidelines to promote standardization in the future.

Long-term outcomes of radiofrequency ablation for unifocal low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma: a large cohort study of 414 patients

Lin Yan et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) in a large population. The results showed that RFA was effective in treating PTMC with significant reduction in tumor volume, low incidence of complications, and no life-threatening events during the follow-up period.

Efficacy of radiofrequency ablation for recurrent thyroid cancer invading the airways

Sae Rom Chung et al.

Summary: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is effective and safe for local control of recurrent thyroid cancer in the central neck compartment after total thyroidectomy, even for tumors invading the airways. The complete disappearance rate is highest for recurrent tumors not in contact with the trachea. The overall complication rate is 21.4%.

Indications and Strategy for Active Surveillance of Adult Low-Risk Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: Consensus Statements from the Japan Association of Endocrine Surgery Task Force on Management for Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma

Iwao Sugitani et al.

Summary: The management of patients with low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC; T1aN0M0) has become an important clinical issue, with the adoption of active surveillance (AS) to avoid overtreatment gradually increasing worldwide. However, not all PTMCs are suitable for AS, and the Japan Association of Endocrine Surgery has produced consensus statements regarding indications and strategies for AS in adult patients diagnosed with low-risk PTMC. These statements provide guidelines for AS and recommend immediate surgery for certain high-risk features in PTMC patients.

Ultrasonography-guided radiofrequency ablation vs. surgery for the treatment of solitary T1bN0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma: A comparative study

Jing Xiao et al.

Summary: This retrospective study compared the midterm outcomes of ultrasonography-guided RFA and surgery in treating clinical solitary T1bN0M0 PTC. The results showed that RFA is feasible and safe for treating this type of thyroid carcinoma, suggesting it may be an alternative to surgery in some patients.

Global cancer statistics 2020: GLOBOCAN estimates of incidence and mortality worldwide for 36 cancers in 185 countries

Hyuna Sung et al.

Summary: The global cancer burden in 2020 saw an estimated 19.3 million new cancer cases and almost 10.0 million cancer deaths. Female breast cancer surpassed lung cancer as the most commonly diagnosed cancer, while lung cancer remained the leading cause of cancer death. These trends are expected to rise in 2040, with transitioning countries experiencing a larger increase compared to transitioned countries due to demographic changes and risk factors associated with globalization and a growing economy. Efforts to improve cancer prevention measures and provision of cancer care in transitioning countries will be crucial for global cancer control.

Ultrasound-Guided Radiofrequency Ablation Versus Thyroid Lobectomy for Low-Risk Papillary Thyroid Microcarcinoma: A Propensity-Matched Cohort Study of 884 Patients

Lin Yan et al.

Summary: This study compared the clinical outcomes of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) versus thyroid lobectomy (TL) for low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) and found comparable results in a four-year follow-up period. RFA, as a minimally invasive modality, may be a promising alternative treatment option for low-risk PTMC patients.

Xiao-Jing Cao et al.

Summary: Thermal ablation may be a feasible, effective, and safe treatment option for patients with solitary T1bN0M0 papillary thyroid carcinoma who are ineligible for or unwilling to undergo surgery. Post-treatment tumor size significantly decreased, with some tumors completely disappearing, and a low complication rate.
