Conventional thyroidectomy vs thyroid thermal ablation on postoperative quality of life and satisfaction for patients with benign thyroid nodules

Hao Jin et al.

Summary: This study compared the complications and treatment effects of conventional thyroidectomy and thyroid thermal ablation, and found that thyroid thermal ablation is superior to conventional thyroidectomy in terms of patient satisfaction, post-operative quality of life, and shorter hospital stay, but requires longer time to achieve volume reduction of benign thyroid nodules. The complication rates between the two groups were similar.

Summary: This study evaluated the long-term efficacy and safety of radiofrequency ablation (RFA) for low-risk papillary thyroid microcarcinoma (PTMC) in a large population. The results showed that RFA was effective in treating PTMC with significant reduction in tumor volume, low incidence of complications, and no life-threatening events during the follow-up period.

Efficacy and safety of thermal ablation for autonomously functioning thyroid nodules: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Hyun Jin Kim et al.

Summary: Thermal ablation is an effective and safe treatment for patients with autonomously functioning thyroid nodules (AFTNs), achieving a TSH normalization rate of 71.2% and volume reduction rate of 69.4% at a mean follow-up of 12.8 months. Subgroup analyses showed that nodule volume did not significantly affect the efficacy of thermal ablation.

Efficacy of radiofrequency ablation for recurrent thyroid cancer invading the airways

Sae Rom Chung et al.

Summary: Radiofrequency ablation (RFA) is effective and safe for local control of recurrent thyroid cancer in the central neck compartment after total thyroidectomy, even for tumors invading the airways. The complete disappearance rate is highest for recurrent tumors not in contact with the trachea. The overall complication rate is 21.4%.

Jing Xiao et al.

Summary: This retrospective study compared the midterm outcomes of ultrasonography-guided RFA and surgery in treating clinical solitary T1bN0M0 PTC. The results showed that RFA is feasible and safe for treating this type of thyroid carcinoma, suggesting it may be an alternative to surgery in some patients.

Summary: This case report describes the use of RFA in a patient with recurrent MTC, showing significant shrinkage in ablation zones and a decrease in serum calcitonin levels four months after treatment. These findings suggest that RFA may be an effective and safe treatment option for local recurrent MTC.

RFA and benign thyroid nodules: Review of the current literature

Haris Muhammad et al.

Summary: Benign thyroid nodules are common in the general population and are often detected through ultrasound. Although surgery is generally well-tolerated with low risk, it can lead to complications such as hypothyroidism and nerve injury. Recent advancements in image-guided ablation techniques like radiofrequency ablation have shown similar safety profiles to surgery and promising results for challenging surgical candidates. Limited data exists on the North American population regarding the efficacy of RFA for benign nodules.
