Molecular epidemiology of virulent E. coli among rural small scale dairy herds and shops: Efficacy of selected marine algal extracts and disinfectants

Ahmed S. Ahmed et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of virulent pathotypes of E. coli in cow's environment and dairy shops in Qena, Egypt, which are associated with the misuse of antibiotics. Various pathotypes, including EPEC, STEC, EIEC, and ETEC, were isolated from water and milk-related samples, and non-O157 STEC serotypes were recovered from human diarrheagenic patients. The study also highlights the presence of antibiotic resistance genes and evaluates the antibacterial activity of disinfectants and algal extracts.
