The Antarctic and South American species of Deschampsia: phylogenetic relationships and cytogenetic differentiation

Maria Laura Gonzalez et al.

Summary: Deschampsia P. Beauv. is a cosmopolitan grass genus with about 15 species in South America and Antarctica. The species are difficult to delimit due to high phenotypic plasticity and potential hybridization. All studied South American and Antarctic taxa share a conserved basic chromosome number of x = 13, with frequent occurrence of polyploids indicating genomic duplication as a recurrent process in the evolutionary history. High variability in rDNA patterns suggests close phylogenetic relationships between Deschampsia and Deyeuxia, with reticulation and hybridization events possibly playing a role.

Cytogenomics of Deschampsia P. Beauv. (Poaceae) Species Based on Sequence Analyses and FISH Mapping of CON/COM Satellite DNA Families

Alexandra V. Amosova et al.

Summary: The genus Deschampsia P. Beauv. includes a group of polymorphic species that are highly tolerant to stressful environmental conditions. In this study, CON/COM repeats were identified and classified in genomes of different species within the genus, showing high homology but potential divergence due to single-nucleotide alterations. Chromosome mapping demonstrated variability in localization of cytogenetic markers, aiding in the identification of chromosomal rearrangements. This research provides valuable insight for genetic and phylogenetic studies within the Deschampsia genus.
