Fully biodegradable polylactide foams with ultrahigh expansion ratio and heat resistance for green packaging

Peng Li et al.

Summary: In this study, long chain branching (LCB) structures were efficiently introduced into polylactide (PLA) using sustainable soybean oil (SO), leading to improved foamability, heat resistance, and accelerated hydrolytic degradation. The addition of SO significantly increased the amount of LCB structures in PLA, resulting in enhanced melting strength and crystallization performance. Furthermore, PLA foam trays with light weight and good heat resistance were successfully developed, offering a green alternative to non-degradable oil-based plastics in disposable packaging products.
