Rare taxa maintain the stability of crop mycobiomes and ecosystem functions

Chao Xiong et al.

Summary: The composition of plant-associated fungal communities is primarily influenced by compartment niche and host species rather than environmental factors. Abundant fungal taxa in crop-related communities are mainly dominated by a few taxa, while the majority of diversity comes from rare taxa. Different plant compartments are controlled by different ecological processes, with rare taxa playing a key role in fungal co-occurrence networks and ecosystem functioning.

The plant endosphere world - bacterial life within plants

Stephane Compant et al.

Summary: The plant endosphere is colonized by complex microbial communities and microorganisms, which range from mutualism to pathogenicity. The diversity and composition of these endophytes depend on various factors such as the plant, its organs and tissues, physiological conditions, growth stage, and environment. More research is needed to improve our understanding of the role of microbiota colonizing the endosphere on plant traits and ecosystem functioning.

Disruption of Firmicutes and Actinobacteria abundance in tomato rhizosphere causes the incidence of bacterial wilt disease

Sang-Moo Lee et al.

Summary: The study showed that enrichment of protective microbiota in the rhizosphere facilitates disease suppression, while disruption of protective rhizobacteria can increase the incidence of disease. Artificial disruption of Gram-positive bacteria in rhizosphere soil resulted in higher occurrence of bacterial wilt in tomatoes. Identification of specific Gram-positive bacteria species in healthy rhizosphere soil contributed to plant immunity activation and enhanced plant disease resistance.

Root exudates drive soil-microbe-nutrient feedbacks in response to plant growth

Mengli Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of root exudates from different growth stages of Arabidopsis thaliana plants on soil bacterial communities, soil nutrients, and plant growth. The results showed that fast-growing stage root exudates had a significant impact on soil bacterial community structure, induced higher nutrient mineralization, and enhanced plant growth. Plants may adjust their exudation patterns during different growth phases to meet increased nutrient demands for faster growth.

Plant Genetic Networks Shaping Phyllosphere Microbial Community

Sara Shakir et al.

Summary: The phyllosphere microbial communities interact with host plants through complex molecular interactions, with researchers exploring how the host genotype shapes these communities and seeking stable and well-adapted microbiomes. Understanding the assembly and function of phyllosphere microbiomes is crucial for harnessing them to improve plant growth and health in managed systems.

Experimental evidence of microbial inheritance in plants and transmission routes from seed to phyllosphere and root

Ahmed Abdelfattah et al.

Summary: The study found that the seed microbiome is diverse, with the microbial composition in leaves and embryos showing similarity, while roots and pericarps have less diverse and distinct microbial communities. The establishment of root and leaf communities involves inheritance, niche differentiation, and different transmission routes.

Engineering rhizobacteria for sustainable agriculture

Timothy L. Haskett et al.

Summary: The use of plant growth promoting rhizobacteria as crop inoculants holds great potential for sustainable agriculture, but inconsistent field performance and genetic challenges remain obstacles. Engineering PGP traits into efficacious rhizobacterial isolates offers a powerful strategy for improving PGPR tailored for agricultural use. Harnessing synthetic plant-to-bacteria signaling is crucial for optimizing efficacy and establishing biocontainment of engineered PGPR.
