Characterisation of the first 250 000 hospital admissions for COVID-19 in Brazil: a retrospective analysis of nationwide data

Otavio T. Ranzani et al.

Summary: A total of 254,288 patients with RT-qPCR-confirmed COVID-19 were admitted to hospitals in Brazil, with an overall in-hospital mortality rate of 38%, rising to 59% in ICU patients and 80% in those on ventilators. The burden of ICU admissions and mortality rates varied across different regions of the country, emphasizing the need for improved healthcare access for critically ill COVID-19 patients, especially in low- and middle-income countries.

HIV infection and COVID-19 death: a population-based cohort analysis of UK primary care data and linked national death registrations within the OpenSAFELY platform

Krishnan Bhaskaran et al.

Summary: This study found that people living with HIV in the UK are at a higher risk of COVID-19 mortality compared to those without HIV. Even after adjusting for age, sex, ethnicity, and a range of comorbidities, the elevated risk remained significant, especially among individuals of Black ethnicity. Targeted policies should be considered to address this increased risk in the evolving pandemic response.

Risk of adverse coronavirus disease 2019 outcomes for people living with HIV

Maya M. Mellor et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis showed that people living with HIV have a higher risk of COVID-19 mortality compared to those without HIV, and antiretroviral therapy may influence this risk. However, further investigation is needed to clarify the relationship between HIV and COVID-19 outcomes.

COVID-19 fatality rates in hospitalized patients: systematic review and meta-analysis

Ana Macedo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the mortality rates of COVID-19 patients, finding rates of 11.5% in general admitted patients and 40.5% in critical care cases. These findings should guide resource allocation and economic burden calculations during pandemics.

COVID-19 Outcomes Among Persons Living With or Without Diagnosed HIV Infection in New York State

James M. Tesoriero et al.

Summary: This cohort study conducted in New York State found that persons living with diagnosed HIV had poorer outcomes related to COVID-19 compared to persons living without diagnosed HIV. Previous HIV diagnosis was associated with higher rates of severe disease requiring hospitalization, and hospitalization risk increased with progression of HIV disease stage.

Understanding varying COVID-19 mortality rates reported in Africa compared to Europe, Americas and Asia

Emeka Francis Okonji et al.

Summary: Factors contributing to the low COVID-19 infection and case fatality rates in African countries may include low testing rate, poor documentation of cause of death, younger age population, good vitamin D status, cross-immunity from other viruses, and lessons learnt from other infectious diseases. With the emergence of new variants and insufficient vaccine rollout, an innovative and efficient response is needed to enhance testing and accurate reporting to mitigate the spread of the infection.
