The Critical Role of Semantic Working Memory in Language Comprehension and Production

Randi C. Martin

Summary: Research indicates that semantic working memory plays a more critical role than phonological working memory in language processing, supporting the retention of word meanings and resolution of semantic interference between sentence constituents. Semantic working memory also supports advance planning in sentence formulation, while phonological working memory has a limited scope and mainly contributes to verbatim sentence recall.

An empirical comparison of univariate versus multivariate methods for the analysis of brain-behavior mapping

Maria V. Ivanova et al.

Summary: Lesion symptom mapping (LSM) tools are used to identify neural structures critical for specific behaviors or symptoms. Univariate lesion symptom mapping (ULSM) methods compare test scores in patients with and without lesions on a voxel basis, while multivariate lesion symptom mapping (MLSM) methods consider effects of all lesioned voxels simultaneously. The study compared ULSM and MLSM methods, showing no clear superiority of either, but recommending their combined use for enhanced confidence in results.

Neural substrates of subcortical aphasia in subacute stroke: Voxel-based lesion symptom mapping study

Gowun Kim et al.

Summary: Subcortical aphasia is characterized by damage in subcortical brain areas without affecting cortical functions. This study used VLSM and atlas-based analyses to investigate neural substrates associated with subcortical aphasia in stroke patients, identifying specific white matter tracts and subcortical structures that are more affected in the aphasia group. The findings highlight the importance of language processing in the left hemisphere around the sylvian fissure.

Is This Within Reach? Left but Not Right Brain Damage Affects Affordance Judgment Tendencies

Jennifer Randerath et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of left or right hemisphere injuries on judgments of reachability in stroke patients. While there were no significant differences in perceptual sensitivity and accuracy between groups, left brain damaged patients showed no clear judgment tendency, possibly related to damage in specific brain regions.

Maintaining verbal short-term memory representations in non-perceptual parietal regions

Qiuhai Yue et al.

Summary: The study used fMRI and RSA to investigate the maintenance of phonological and semantic information in verbal short-term memory. The results suggest that phonological information is maintained in the left supramarginal gyrus, while semantic and phonological information may be stored in the left angular gyrus, providing support for the hypothesis of a dedicated buffer in phonological short-term memory.
