High-resolution ultrasound changes of the vagus nerve in idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD): a possible additional index of disease

F. Sartucci et al.

Summary: Histopathological studies have shown degeneration of the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve in patients with idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD). This study used high-resolution ultrasound to measure the caliber of the vagus nerve and found significant atrophy in IPD patients compared to controls. The results suggest that HRUS can be a non-invasive and useful tool for screening and monitoring IPD patients.
