Pathogenomic analyses of Mycobacterium microti, an ESX-1-deleted member of the Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex causing disease in various hosts

Mickael Orgeur et al.

Summary: The study revealed genomic and phenotypic variabilities among Mycobacterium microti isolates, with clinical isolates clustering separately from vole isolates and lacking the RD1(mic) region. Clinical isolates showed higher virulence compared to vole isolates but lower virulence than M. tuberculosis H37Rv. Furthermore, the vole isolate ATCC 35872 demonstrated potential as a vaccine candidate in immunocompromised individuals.

ESX-1-Independent Horizontal Gene Transfer by Mycobacterium tuberculosis Complex Strains

Jan Madacki et al.

Summary: The study revealed that interstrain DNA transfer among tubercle bacilli is independent of a functional ESX-1 type VII secretion system, contrasting with the widely studied model organism Mycobacterium smegmatis. This finding provides new insights into the genetic events driving the pathoevolution of M. tuberculosis and challenges previous perceptions of HGT in mycobacteria, particularly for species lacking ESX-1 secretion systems.
