CO2-plant effects do not account for the gap between dryness indices and projected dryness impacts in CMIP6 or CMIP5

Jacob Scheff et al.

Summary: Recent studies have found that terrestrial dryness indices calculated from future climate model projections mostly show negative values, indicating a drying land surface with warming. However, future projections of runoff, bulk soil moisture, and vegetation show regional signals of varying sign. The gap between these indices and their impacts is not solely attributed to CO2-driven stomatal closure, suggesting the presence of alternative mechanisms.

Winter melt trends portend widespread declines in snow water resources

Keith N. Musselman et al.

Summary: The decline in mountain snowpack is often tracked using snow water equivalent trends, however, an alternative metric known as temperature-driven daily snowmelt during the accumulation season is showing greater increases. Winter precipitation in mountainous regions provides water for one billion people globally, but climate warming and earlier snowmelt are threatening this natural water storage. Snowmelt trends are highly sensitive to temperature, indicating a steeper decline in continental-scale snow water resources compared to trends in snow water equivalent.

Projected Changes to Hydroclimate Seasonality in the Continental United States

Kate Marvel et al.

Summary: Future changes in the hydrological cycle in a warming world may lead to shifts in drought risk, with impacts on natural and human systems. Analysis of projected changes in hydroclimate variables across the US reveals shifts in the amplitude and phase of their annual cycles, even in regions where no robust change in annual mean is expected. Phase shifts towards earlier peak evaporation in the northern regions, and peak runoff and total soil moisture in the western regions are identified as significant changes.
