Incidence, Clinical Characteristics, Risk Factors, and Outcomes of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Patients With COVID-19 Results of the UMC-19-S12

Rebeca Gonzalez Gonzalez et al.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence, risk factors, clinical characteristics, and outcomes of upper gastrointestinal bleeding (UGB) in COVID-19 patients before hospitalization. The incidence of UGB in COVID-19 patients attending the emergency department was lower compared with non-COVID-19 patients. Digestive symptoms were more common than respiratory symptoms in COVID-19 patients with UGB. COVID-19 patients with UGB underwent fewer gastroscopies and endoscopic treatments and had a higher in-hospital mortality compared to non-COVID patients with UGB.

Safety of intermediate dose of low molecular weight heparin in COVID-19 patients

Massimo Mattioli et al.

Summary: This study retrospectively evaluated the safety of intermediate dose regimens of low-weight molecular heparin in COVID-19 patients. The results suggest that the use of an intermediate dose of LWMH appears to be feasible and safe in COVID-19 patients, without increasing the risk of bleeding or need for blood transfusion. Further studies are needed to confirm these findings.

Characteristics and Outcomes of Patients Undergoing Endoscopy During the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Multicenter Study from New York City

John W. Blackett et al.

Summary: This retrospective multicenter study in New York compared endoscopies performed during the COVID-19 pandemic in patients with and without the virus. Patients with COVID-19 undergoing endoscopy were more likely to require interventions, and a significant number of patients endoscoped without testing were subsequently found to be COVID-positive. Gastroenterologists in affected areas should adapt to changing patterns of endoscopy practice and ensure pre-endoscopy COVID testing.

Heparin in COVID-19 Patients Is Associated with Reduced In-Hospital Mortality: the Multicenter Italian CORIST Study *

Augusto Di Castelnuovo et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of heparin administration on survival in a large cohort of Italian COVID-19 patients and found that in-hospital heparin treatment was associated with a lower mortality rate, especially in severely ill patients and those with strong coagulation activation. Further results from randomized clinical trials are needed to provide clear recommendations.

Implications of SARS-CoV-2 infection for neurogastroenterology

Giovanni Marasco et al.

Summary: COVID-19 is associated with gastrointestinal and hepatic manifestations, affecting gut microbiota, intestinal barrier, and enteric nervous system function, leading to symptoms like diarrhea and vomiting. Liver and pancreas dysfunctions have also been described as complications of COVID-19, emphasizing its systemic multiorgan involvement.
