Aluminum toxicity in plants and its possible mitigation in acid soils by biochar: A review

Rajpal Shetty et al.

Summary: Aluminum toxicity is a serious issue for agricultural plants, and biochar is gaining popularity as a potential solution, although there is a lack of comprehensive information regarding its effects. Several mechanisms within biochar, such as adsorption, absorption, complexation, cation exchange, and electrostatic interaction, are believed to play significant roles in ameliorating Al toxicity. Further research and long-term field studies are needed to better understand the effects of biochar on aluminum toxicity.

Effect of alkaline and chemically engineered biochar on soil properties and phosphorus bioavailability in maize

Muhammad Farooq Qayyum et al.

Summary: The study shows that acidified biochar amendments have the potential to improve plant P uptake and dry-matter yield, with different biochars showing varying effects under P conditions. Acidified RHB significantly affects root dry-matter, while non-acidified WSB exhibits higher P content in incubation study. Further research is needed to explore specific P management strategies for sustainable crop production.

Lead and aluminium-induced oxidative stress and alteration in the activities of antioxidant enzymes in chicory plants

Bisma Malik et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of exposure to different levels of aluminum and lead on chicory plants, finding that root/shoot growth and biomass accumulation were significantly affected, with roots containing higher concentrations of aluminum and lead compared to shoots. Additionally, the antioxidant defense enzyme system in chicory plants showed a positive correlation with each increment in aluminum and lead stress, indicating an efficient detoxification mechanism against these heavy metals.

Assessing the potential of sewage sludge-derived biochar as a novel phosphorus fertilizer: Influence of extractant solutions and pyrolysis temperatures

Cicero Celio de Figueiredo et al.

Summary: Sewage sludge-derived biochar (SSB) is a potential phosphorus (P) source to replace soluble P fertilizers, but the solubility of biochar-P is affected by pyrolysis temperature, which should be considered when using SSB as an alternative to inorganic P fertilizers.

Enhanced Removal of Sulfonated Lignite from Oil Wastewater with Multidimensional MgAl-LDH Nanoparticles

Ling Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, hierarchical MgAl-LDH nanoparticles with a flower-like morphology were successfully prepared under a hydrothermal condition using CTAB and SA as templates. These nanoparticles exhibited high adsorption capacity for sulfonated lignite and could be regenerated for repeated use, with the main adsorption mechanisms involving electrostatic attraction and ion exchange.

Use of biochar to reduce mercury accumulation in Oryza sativa L: A trial for sustainable management of historically polluted farmlands

Yi Man et al.

Summary: The research revealed that the use of rice hull-derived biochar and mixture of wheatrice straw-derived biochar can significantly reduce bioavailable mercury concentrations in rice soils, thereby decreasing mercury uptake by rice and increasing rice biomass. The application of biochar led to a significant decrease in MeHg intake, suggesting the potential of biochar in managing mercury-contaminated rice fields.
