Effect of type and quantity of emulsifier in bitumen polymer emulsion on microsurfacing performance

Mohsen Aboutalebi Esfahani et al.

Summary: The study investigated the performance characteristics of microsurfacing made by bitumen polymer emulsion (BPE) with different percentages of emulsifiers. It was found that increasing the amount of emulsifiers and BPE led to improved adhesion, bitumen coating on grains, mixing time, and sand adherence in various tests. However, different types of emulsifiers had varying effects on the performance, with type I showing better results in some tests but lower optimum bitumen compared to type II. The type, percentage of emulsifier, and percentage of BPE were found to have significant effects on the performance characteristics of microsurfacing.

A comparative environmental impact analysis of asphalt mixtures containing crumb rubber and reclaimed asphalt pavement using life cycle assessment

Sara Bressi et al.

Summary: The use of crumb rubber and reclaimed asphalt in asphalt mixtures can reduce environmental burdens in road construction and maintenance, but the additional consumption of resources and emissions associated with their treatment needs to be considered; life cycle assessment reveals that the treatment of CR has significant environmental impacts; mixtures containing RAP show improved environmental indicators.

Laboratory investigation on the properties of asphalt concrete containing reclaimed asphalt pavement and waste cooking oil as recycling agent

Hasan Taherkhani et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of adding different dosages of waste cooking oil (WCO) and reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) on the properties of asphalt concrete. Results showed that air voids and optimum asphalt content decreased with increasing WCO and RAP content, while Marshall stability and rutting resistance increased with increasing RAP content but decreased with increasing WCO dosage. Stress-controlled fatigue tests demonstrated that the fatigue resistance of mixtures improved with higher RAP content but decreased with higher WCO dosage.

Characterization of aggregate interlocking in hot mix asphalt by mechanistic performance tests

Pawel Polaczyk et al.

Summary: The locking of aggregate during compaction is crucial for the performance of asphalt mixtures. This study validated the concept of locking points through performance tests and found reasonable definitions based on vertical axial strain and cracking tolerance index. This can be used to evaluate the influence of aggregate interlocking on rutting resistance and fatigue cracking.

Laboratory Evaluation on Performance of Recycled Asphalt Binder and Mixtures under Short-Term Aging Conditions

Yuefeng Zhu et al.

Summary: The study found that asphalt materials undergo aging at high temperatures, impacting the cracking resistance of recycled blends. Recycled blends are more sensitive to aging compared to virgin SBS modified asphalt, and become stiffer with increased RAP binder dosage. Additionally, higher doses of RAP mixtures show better cracking resistance under extended aging times due to potential chemical processes between the binders.

Performance of Aged Asphalt Binder Treated with Various Types of Rejuvenators

Munder Bilema et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different rejuvenators on the performance of an aged asphalt binder, finding that olive, waste, and virgin cooking oils can restore the binder to a penetration grade of 60/70, while virgin and waste engine oils require more oil. Rejuvenators have an impact on reducing oxidation levels without causing chemical reactions. Further research on waste cooking oil is recommended due to its cost-effectiveness and performance results.
