XPS study of external α-radiolytic oxidation of UO2 in the presence of argon or hydrogen

N. L. Hansson et al.

Summary: The study found that exposure to a 3.30 MBq Am-241 source under an Ar atmosphere led to significant oxidation of the UO2 pellet surface, while the presence of H-2 atmosphere suppressed oxidation and dissolution. The dissolved uranium concentration was reduced by a factor of 10 under H-2 atmosphere compared to Ar atmosphere experiments.

Interaction of Hydrogen with Ceria: Hydroxylation, Reduction, and Hydride Formation on the Surface and in the Bulk

Zhaorui Li et al.

Summary: The study explores the interplay between surface and bulk in hydride formation in ceria (CeO2) using experiment and theoretical calculations. It shows that as the concentration of oxygen vacancies increases, hydride becomes more stable and surface hydride formation is kinetically favorable at relatively low temperatures. This information is important for understanding the reactivity of ceria-based catalysts in a hydrogen-rich atmosphere.

Reactivity of hydrogen species on oxide surfaces

Zhaorui Li et al.

Summary: This article briefly reviews the research progress on the reactivity of various hydrogen species on oxide surfaces, including the oxygen vacancy-controlled reactivity of OH species, oxygen vacancy-stabilized hydride species, and H-2-oxide interactions. The strong influences of oxygen vacancies in oxides on both stability and reactivity of various hydrogen species on oxide surfaces have been highlighted.

C Influence of ionic strength on hydrogen generation during interaction of copper with deoxygenated neutral solution

Iva Betova et al.

Summary: The interaction between copper and deoxygenated solutions is crucial for quantifying corrosion in a final high-level nuclear waste repository during long-term exposure. The effect of ionic strength on this interaction was evaluated through electrochemical measurements, with a proposed extended model to account for extra features in impedance spectra. The model predictions allowed for estimation of hydrogen production rates in pure water, compared to existing literature data.

Time-dependent surface modification of uranium oxides exposed to water plasma

Ghada El Jamal et al.

Summary: This study investigates the dynamics of redox changes in UO2 films induced by water plasma, showing that U(iv) is initially oxidized to U(v) and then to U(vi), with U(vi) slowly being reduced back to U(v) over extended exposure times. The experiments demonstrate that the formation of U(v) on the surface upon reduction of U(vi) is different from that when U(iv) is oxidized to U(v), with U(v) being localized in the bulk of the film and displaying a different reactivity. The observations are supported by a simple kinetic model describing the redox processes involved.

Summary: The study investigates the effects of different gas plasmas on thin films of UO2, U2O5, and UO3, finding that the surface of UO2 is oxidized to a higher oxidation state after interacting with water plasma at 400 degrees C, and that the outermost surface layer in all three cases is composed of hexavalent uranium.
