On cold atmospheric-pressure plasma jet induced DNA damage in cells

Nishtha Gaur et al.

Summary: The study investigates the potential role of hydroxyl radicals in cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) jet treatment, showing correlation between CAP jet-induced DNA damage and the presence of hydroxyl radicals. A 'plasma screen' based on a hydrogel film is demonstrated to significantly reduce DNA damage while facilitating the delivery of hydrogen peroxide, which could be beneficial for applications focusing on DNA damage such as cancer treatment, as well as in situations where DNA damage should be minimized, such as open-wound treatment and dermatology.

Summary: Atmospheric pressure plasma jets generated using noble gases have been intensely studied for over 2 decades due to their unique physicochemical properties and their suitability for treating living tissues. The interaction between molecular gases and noble gas plasma creates reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) which ultimately dictate the chemical composition of the RONS arriving at a biological target.

Subcellular mechanism of microbial inactivation during water disinfection by cold atmospheric-pressure plasma

Hangbo Xu et al.

Summary: This study revealed the subcellular mechanism of yeast cell inactivation during plasma-liquid interaction in terms of various factors. Results showed that plasma mainly inactivated yeast cells through damaging cell membrane, intracellular redox and ion homeostasis, and energy metabolism, as well as causing DNA fragmentation. The role of different antimicrobial factors in plasma sterilization was investigated, with center dot OH and O-12 contributing most to yeast inactivation.

Human osteoblast-like SAOS-2 cells on submicron-scale fibers coated with nanocrystalline diamond films

Marie Steinerova et al.

Summary: A unique composite nanodiamond-based porous material with a hierarchically-organized submicron-nanostructure was constructed for potential bone tissue engineering. The NCD-coated porous SiOx meshes showed improved cell adhesion, growth, and osteogenic differentiation compared to uncoated samples, particularly those with an O-terminated NCD coating. The results suggest that the tunable wettability and appropriate surface morphology of NCD-coated samples contribute to their enhanced performance in bone tissue engineering applications.

Summary: This article reviewed 55 in-vitro studies on the antimicrobial effect of cold atmospheric plasma (CAP) on dental pathogens. The results showed a time-dependent increase of the antimicrobial effect of CAP. Although there were differences in the results among studies, clusters could be identified based on the pathogen, working gases, and treatment time intervals. CAP may be a promising alternative for antimicrobial treatment in dentistry, but further research is needed for verification.
