Pulmonary Targeting of Inhalable Moxifloxacin Microspheres for Effective Management of Tuberculosis

Bhavya Vishwa et al.

Summary: The study aimed to achieve localized lung delivery of the anti-tubercular drug moxifloxacin targeting alveolar macrophages through inhalable microspheres as a dry powder inhaler method. The optimized microspheres showed preferential accumulation in lung tissue and sustained drug residence in the lung, suggesting a promising therapeutic approach for effective tuberculosis eradication and improved patient adherence to treatment.

Thymol Nanoemulsion: A New Therapeutic Option for Extensively Drug Resistant Foodborne Pathogens

Mahmoud M. Bendary et al.

Summary: In this study, the use of thymol nanoemulsion showed significant improvements in body weight gain, feed conversion ratio, and mortality of chickens challenged with extensively drug resistant Salmonella Enteritidis. The treatment enhanced the growth of gut Bifidobacteria species, strengthening the immune system. These findings suggest the therapeutic use of thymol nanoemulsion against resistant foodborne pathogens, with potential applications in immunocompromised individuals and veterinary fields.

Repurposing of antidiabetics as Serratia marcescens virulence inhibitors

Wael A. H. Hegazy et al.

Summary: Vildagliptin and metformin reduced the expression of virulence encoding genes in S. marcescens, but did not show anti-virulence activities in vitro or in vivo. On the other hand, sitagliptin significantly inhibited virulence factors in vitro, reduced their expression, and protected mice from S. marcescens infection. Docking study revealed that sitagliptin was more active than metformin and fully bound to the SmaR receptor, suggesting potential as a therapeutic target.

Synthesis of Gold Nanoparticles by Using Green Machinery: Characterization and In Vitro Toxicity

Ahmed Al Saqr et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the efficient synthesis of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) using peel extracts of Benincasa hispida, which exhibited significant antibacterial and anticancer activities. The biosynthesized GNPs showed spherical shape with an average particle size of 22.18 +/- 2 nm, and exerted cytotoxic effects on human cervical cancer cells while sparing normal cells. Such cytotoxicity was attributed to the increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Overall, B. hispida peel extracts can be a natural source of antimicrobial and anticancer agents through the synthesis of GNPs.

Xylitol Inhibits Growth and Blocks Virulence in Serratia marcescens

Ahdab N. Khayyat et al.

Summary: Research has shown that xylitol can inhibit the growth of S. marcescens, prevent biofilm formation, reduce prodigiosin production, block protease activity, and affect bacterial motility and sensitivity to hydrogen peroxide. By targeting genes that regulate virulence factor production, xylitol deprives S. marcescens of its bacterial virulence.

Retrospective Study of Bone-TB in Oman: 2002-2019

Wael A. H. Hegazy et al.

Summary: The study in the Sultanate of Oman revealed that Bone Tuberculosis (Bone-TB) predominantly affects males, with spine being the most common anatomical location. A significant portion of cases were initially diagnosed in other organs before spreading to the bones, with relapse rate at 12.4% during treatment. Gastrointestinal tract disturbances were the most commonly associated side effect, and resistance to various drugs was detected in a small number of cases.
