Effects of Adapted N-Fertilisation Strategies on Nitrate Leaching and Yield Performance of Arable Crops in North-Western Germany

Insa Kuehling et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that moderately reducing nitrogen fertilizer application (10-20%) in a karst water protection zone can significantly lower nitrate concentrations without significantly affecting crop yields. However, the long-term high nitrogen surpluses in livestock-intensive farming systems are identified as a limiting factor.

Grain Quality of Maize Cultivars as a Function of Planting Dates, Irrigation and Nitrogen Stress: A Case Study from Semiarid Conditions of Iran

Maryam Rahimi Jahangirlou et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the concentration and composition of starch, protein, and oil in maize grain in response to different planting dates, irrigation intervals, and nitrogen rates. High nitrogen fertilization increased protein and nonessential amino acids, while high irrigation combined with high nitrogen rates increased oil content. The findings highlight the complex relationship between various factors and their impact on maize grain quality characteristics.

Sustainable Management of Water Resources in Supplementary Irrigation Management

Monika Markovic et al.

Summary: Watermark, Tensiometer, and TDR are commonly used soil water sensors in irrigation practice, with variations in their accuracy in measuring Soil Water Content (SWC). This study found that Watermark and Tensiometer generally overestimated SWC, while TDR underestimated it, particularly in the range of readily available water. Laboratory testing improved the performance of all sensors by reducing the root mean square error and mean average error.

Assessing the use of a drought-tolerant variety as adaptation strategy for maize production under climate change in the savannas of Nigeria

Abdullahi I. Tofa et al.

Summary: The study utilized the Decision Support System for Agricultural Technology Transfer (DSSAT) to quantify the impact of climate change on maize yield in savanna ecological zones of Nigeria. The results indicated that higher temperatures caused more yield losses for non-drought-tolerant maize variety than for the drought-tolerant variety, highlighting the importance of modifying maize breeding schemes to combine tolerances to drought and heat stresses in northern Nigeria's agro-ecological zones.

Climate Change, Crop Yields, and Grain Quality of C3 Cereals: A Meta-Analysis of [CO2], Temperature, and Drought Effects

Sinda Ben Mariem et al.

Summary: Climate change can affect cereal yield and quality through factors such as elevated CO2 concentration, increased temperature, and drought stress. While elevated CO2 concentration can stimulate grain production, it negatively impacts nutritional traits. Elevated temperature and drought have stronger effects on grain yield, with elevated temperature decreasing grain weight and quality. Overall, the changing climate has a negative impact on cereal quality and nutritional value.
