Towards upscaling the valorization of wheat straw residues: alkaline pretreatment using sodium hydroxide, enzymatic hydrolysis and biogas production

Jelica Novakovic et al.

Summary: This study focused on investigating enzymatic saccharification and detoxification of wheat straw to enhance the performance of conventional anaerobic systems in treating recalcitrant fractions of agricultural waste. It was found that the optimized conditions for pretreatment resulted in satisfactory COD removal efficiencies for OLRs up to 10 kg COD/m(3)/day, significantly reducing the hydraulic retention time compared to untreated straw.

Effect of thermo-chemical pretreatment on the saccharification and enzymatic digestibility of olive mill stones and their bioconversion towards alcohols

Ioanna Ntaikou et al.

Summary: The study shows that thermo-chemical pretreatment can significantly enhance the enzymatic digestibility of olive mill stones (OMS) and valorize the generated free sugars into alcohols. By adjusting parameters such as reaction time, temperature, type and concentration of dilute acids and bases, higher ethanol and xylitol yields can be obtained.

Minimal Enzymes Cocktail Development by Filamentous Fungi Consortia in Solid-State Cultivation and Valorization of Pineapple Crown Waste by Enzymatic Saccharification

Wellen Fabricia Aviz Teixeira et al.

Summary: The study focused on developing filamentous fungi consortia compatible with pineapple wastes for cellulose-degrading enzyme production, which could increase enzyme yield and enhance the saccharification process. The use of mixed cultures developed from agroindustrial wastes provides a cost-effective alternative to traditional enzyme production methods, showing potential for application in other bioenergy feedstocks.
