Efficiency of biotransformation of shellfish waste to carotenoprotein by autolysis and crab-shrimp endo-enzymes

M. P. Kumudu S. K. de Silva et al.

Summary: The study presented a simple and environmentally friendly method to recover carotenoproteins from shellfish waste for aquafeed. The shrimp:crab ratio significantly influenced the recovery efficiency of carotenoproteins, crude protein, and astaxanthin. The 90:10 ratio showed the highest crude protein recovery efficiency, while the 40:20 ratio exhibited the highest astaxanthin recovery efficiency.

In Vitro Bioactivity of Astaxanthin and Peptides from Hydrolisates of Shrimp (Parapenaeus longirostris) By-Products: From the Extraction Process to Biological Effect Evaluation, as Pilot Actions for the Strategy From Waste to Profit

Concetta Maria Messina et al.

Summary: This study aimed to extract astaxanthin and protein hydrolysates from shrimp by-products, with higher yields of astaxanthin obtained through ethyl esters fatty acids extraction. Peptide fractions of <3 kDa and 3-5 kDa showed greater antioxidant activity, while the 5-10 kDa fraction exhibited better ACE-IA activity. The results suggest that low-molecular-weight bioactive peptides and astaxanthin extracted using supercritical fluids have protective effects against oxidative damage.
