Effects of P-N and N-N heterostructures and band alignment on the performance of low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells

Junjiao Li et al.

Summary: The study explores the potential of p-n and n-n heterostructures for low-temperature electrolyte use in SOFCs. The results show that LiZnO-SnO2 and ZnO-SnO2 heterostructures exhibit high ionic conductivities and promising fuel cell performance. Energy band alignment mechanisms based on hetero-junctions are utilized to illustrate the ionic enhancement and electronic suppression processes of the materials, providing new insights into developing heterostructure electrolytes for low-temperature SOFCs.

Proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells: Scale up and stack integration

Long Q. Le et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the scaling up of proton-conducting ceramic fuel cells (PCFCs) into small, multi-cell stacks with reasonable performance and low degradation through material tuning, fabrication procedures, and operating condition adjustments. Specific materials such as the BCZYYb electrolyte and the BCFZY cathode, as well as packaging with ferritic-steel interconnects and macor frames, contribute to the long-term durability and performance of the fuel cell stacks.

Numerical study on the electron-blocking effect and optimized operation parameters of ceria-SOFCs with the pure Sm doping CeO2 electrolyte

Jiamao Zheng et al.

Summary: A numerical model was established to evaluate the effects of operation parameters on the electrochemical performance of ceria-SOFCs with pure SmxCe1-xO2-delta electrolyte. Simulation results showed that reducing operating temperature and increasing electrolyte thickness can greatly decrease leakage current density, leading to high open circuit voltage and cell efficiency. 20%mol Sm doping in the electrolyte was found to have the highest performance in terms of open circuit voltage and cell efficiency.
