Determining real-time mass deposition with a quartz crystal microbalance in an electrostatic, parallel-flow, air-liquid interface exposure system

Kamaljeet Kaur et al.

Summary: In vitro studies are crucial for understanding the biological effects of particulate matter, with air-liquid interface (ALI) systems becoming a popular exposure method. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of using Quartz Crystal Microbalance (QCM) to accurately measure real-time particle mass deposition in an electrostatic ALI system. The QCM system showed promising results for measuring particle deposition uniformity and quantity in in vitro studies of aerosolized nanoparticles.

Air-Liquid Interface Exposure of Lung Epithelial Cells to Low Doses of Nanoparticles to Assess Pulmonary Adverse Effects

Silvia Diabate et al.

Summary: The study suggests that exposure to MNMs at the ALI is more sensitive than under classical submerged conditions, especially for titania NPs. Titania NPs not only triggered cytotoxicity and inflammatory responses, but also induced genotoxicity. Further development of ALI systems may potentially replace acute pulmonary toxicity studies in animals.
