One-pot synthesis of rod-shaped gadolinia doped zinc oxide decorated on graphene oxide composite as an efficient electrode material for isoprenaline sensor

Natesan Manjula et al.

Summary: A novel gadolinia doped zinc oxide decorated graphene oxide (GZO@GO) nanocomposite was synthesized through a cost-effective coprecipitation approach and employed as a superior electrocatalyst and challenging sensing platform for isoprenaline detection. The modified electrode demonstrated higher electrocatalytic activity towards isoprenaline oxidation with good long-term reliability, reproducibility, and anti-interference ability. The proposed material was applied for isoprenaline determination in human urine samples with satisfactory recovery results, suggesting its potential for eco-friendly synthesis of nanocatalysts for isoprenaline sensors.

Effects of harvest time and desalination of feedstock on Spartina alterniflora biochar and its efficiency for Cd2+ removal from aqueous solution

Huijuan Xia et al.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd2+), a primary contaminant in Chinese soils, poses danger to human health and ecological security. Invasive plant Spartina alterniflora in Chinese coastal wetlands shows potential as a feedstock for biochar production, which is efficient in removing heavy metals like Cd2+. The study found that biochars produced from Spartina alterniflora harvested in autumn had the highest carbon content and lowest functional group diversity, and desalination treatment improved pH and carbon content while affecting surface area, pore volume, and Cd2+ adsorption capacity, with varying effects based on harvest time.

Dual threat of tidal flat loss and invasive Spartina alterniflora endanger important shorebird habitat in coastal mainland China

Micha V. Jackson et al.

Summary: The coastal wetlands of China are crucial for shorebirds, but the loss of tidal flats and invasion of smooth cordgrass have led to declines in population. Between 2000 and 2015, there was a 15% net loss in tidal flat area across coastal mainland China, with over half the sites experiencing invasion of Spartina alterniflora. The combined pressures from tidal flat loss and cordgrass invasion were most severe in eastern coastal China, affecting bird species like the Spoon-billed Sandpiper and Nordmann's Greenshank.

Invasive plants as potential sustainable feedstocks for biochar production and multiple applications: A review

Qianwei Feng et al.

Summary: Invasive plants pose threats to ecosystems and human health, while biochar has shown potential in managing them. Biochar derived from invasive plants exhibits significant differences in structure, composition, and adsorption performance compared to traditional biochar, and can be utilized in environmental remediation and agricultural soil improvement. However, there is still limited research on this topic, highlighting the need for further exploration of the potential of invasive plants in biochar production and applications.

Spartina alterniflora invasions reduce soil fungal diversity and simplify co-occurrence networks in a salt marsh ecosystem

Guangliang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated soil fungal communities in a salt marsh ecosystem with native and exotic plant species. It found that plant invasion significantly decreased fungal richness and diversity, altered community composition, and led to homogenization of the fungal community. The invaded sites had a higher proportion of saprophytic fungi, while growth of pathogenic fungi was inhibited. Soil pH and salinity were identified as important factors in shaping the fungal community structures in the context of plant invasion.

Selective adsorption and separation of organic dyes using functionalized cellulose nanocrystals

Nishil Mohammed et al.

Summary: The study evaluated cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) as adsorbents for selective adsorption and separation of organic dyes mixtures, finding that CNCs with surface functional groups can selectively adsorb dyes, with PD-CNCs showing high affinity for MB and MF-CNCs binding selectively to MO. The improved selectivity of PD-CNCs towards MB is attributed to synergistic binding interactions, such as electrostatic attraction, pi-pi stacking, and hydrogen bonding.
