Alternative activation of human macrophages enhances tissue factor expression and production of extracellular vesicles

Philipp J. Hohensinner et al.

Summary: Macrophages can be polarized by tissue environment to meet different needs, with the alternative activation subset leading to increased TF expression and production of TF-bearing extracellular vesicles. Proinflammatory activated macrophages do not respond to lipopolysaccharide and interferon-gamma with increased TF expression, possibly due to TF promoter methylation, which is reversible with demethylating agents.
