Isolation and structural determination of flavan-3-ol derivatives from the Polypodium vulgare L. rhizomes water extract

Michal Glensk et al.

Summary: Polypodium vulgare L., a fern used in traditional Polish medicine, has been identified to possess expectorant and diuretic properties. Through extraction and purification processes, various flavan-3-ol derivatives were isolated from its rhizome, including a new compound (+)-afzelechin and (+)-afzelechin-7-O-α-L-arabinofuranoside. High-resolution mass spectrometry and NMR spectroscopy techniques were utilized to determine the structures of these compounds, with further elucidation of sugar attachment positions achieved through HSQC and HMBC NMR techniques.

Dietary supplements in dermatology: A review of the evidence for zinc, biotin, vitamin D, nicotinamide, and Polypodium

Katherine G. Thompson et al.

Summary: Dietary supplements like zinc, biotin, and vitamin D are commonly recommended by dermatologists, but the evidence for their safety and efficacy is limited. Nicotinamide shows promising evidence in preventing nonmelanoma skin cancers, while further high-quality studies are needed for biotin and zinc.
