Grafting copolymerization of dual acidic ionic liquid on core-shell structured magnetic silica: A magnetically recyclable Bronsted acid catalyst for biodiesel production by one-pot transformation of low-quality oils

Wenlei Xie et al.

Summary: The study aims to prepare an efficient and magnetically separable Bronsted acid catalyst for converting low-quality oils to biodiesel. By coating silica shells on magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles and grafting copolymerization of dual acidic ionic liquids, a solid catalyst with strong catalytic activity was obtained. This catalyst shows good catalytic activities towards transesterification of soybean oil and esterification of free fatty acids, making it a robust solid acid catalyst for one-pot biodiesel production from low-quality acidic oils.

State of Art of Alkaline Earth Metal Oxides Catalysts Used in the Transesterification of Oils for Biodiesel Production

Jesus Andres Tavizon-Pozos et al.

Summary: Alkaline earth metal oxides are gaining popularity as catalysts for biodiesel production due to their availability, non-toxicity, reusability, low cost, and high concentration of surface basic sites. Strategies to improve surface basic sites density and strength, as well as stability and reusability, include mixing or supporting these oxides, as well as modifying acid-base properties and avoiding catalyst leaching. Additionally, the impact of various operation conditions on oil transesterification reactions is reviewed to determine the optimal parameters for different oils.
