Review of organic mulching effects on soil and water loss

Rui Li et al.

Summary: Organic mulch is proven effective for soil and water conservation worldwide, with a recommended application rate of 6-10 Mg ha(-1) significantly reducing soil and water loss. Different mulch materials and experimental site types have minor impacts on reducing soil loss and runoff, while measurement methods play a significant role in the process.

Long-term monitoring of soil bulk density and erosion rates in two Prunus Persica (L) plantations under flood irrigation and glyphosate herbicide treatment in La Ribera district, Spain

Artemi Cerda et al.

Summary: Early season fruit production for the northern European market is highly intensive in fertilization, machinery, irrigation and herbicide use, leading to increased soil erosion and compaction, posing a threat to the UN Sustainable Development Goals for 2030. Research using the Improved Stock Unearthing Method (ISUM) found different responses in soil erosion rates between studied fields, emphasizing the need for more investigations into soil conservation measures in flood irrigated fields.

Cover crop management and water conservation in vineyard and olive orchards

Agata Novara et al.

Summary: Cover crops play a positive role in the sustainability of orchard crops by reducing soil and water losses, improving soil quality, increasing biodiversity, and fertility. Despite their benefits, farmers do not widely apply cover crops and often expect subsidies.

Regional Farmers' Perception and Societal Issues in Vineyards Affected by High Erosion Rates

Artemi Cerda et al.

Summary: The use of catch crops in a viticultural region in Eastern Spain showed benefits such as increased soil organic matter, higher infiltration rates, delayed runoff generation, and reduced runoff rates and soil erosion. However, farmers were mainly against their use due to concerns about them being perceived as 'dirty', high costs, and loss of respect from other farmers.
