Economic history of US catfish farming: Lessons for growth and development of aquaculture

Carole R. Engle et al.

Summary: Catfish farming in the U.S. has experienced ups and downs, but has shown steady growth through continuous adaptation and improvement. Key factors include efficient equipment, nutritionally complete feeds, and multiple-batch production mode. When facing external shocks, the industry adopted intensive systems to reduce costs and achieved steady growth in the past few years.

Resource-use efficiency in US aquaculture: farm-level comparisons across fish species and production systems

C. R. Engle et al.

Summary: Understanding farm-level efficiencies of resource use is critical in comparing the sustainability of aquaculture production systems. Results showed that different production systems exhibited varying levels of efficiency in different resource use aspects, with intensive pond production showing high efficiency in water, energy, labor, management, and capital resource use, while RAS production was most efficient in land and feed use.
