Particulated Cartilage for Chondral and Osteochondral Repair: A Review

Bjorn Borsoe Christensen et al.

Summary: Particulated cartilage has been shown to be an effective treatment for cartilage injuries, especially in juvenile cartilage. Clinical studies suggest that allogeneic and autologous particulated cartilage implantation is a low-cost and effective treatment alternative, but more large randomized controlled studies are needed for validation.

Diagnosis and Treatment of Hip and Knee Osteoarthritis A Review

Jeffrey N. Katz et al.

Summary: Osteoarthritis is a prevalent joint disease that can impact various joints, with risk factors including age, gender, obesity, genetics, and major joint injury. Treatment typically involves exercise, weight management, education, and medication therapy. Advanced cases may require surgical intervention for pain relief and improved function.

A Novel Strategy to Enhance Microfracture Treatment With Stromal Cell-Derived Factor-1 in a Rat Model

Taylor Mustapich et al.

Summary: This study aimed to confirm the chemoattractive properties of SDF-1 in vitro and develop a one-step method for incorporating SDF-1 in vivo to enhance cartilage repair using a rat osteochondral defect model. Results showed that SDF-1 treatment led to complete filling of the cartilage defect with mature cartilage tissue, resulting in improved cartilage repair compared to the control group. The study also demonstrated a strategy to incorporate SDF-1 into gelatin-collagen I scaffolds in vivo, leading to robust hyaline cartilage resurfacing of the defect.

Tissue Regeneration Capacity of Extracellular Vesicles Isolated From Bone Marrow-Derived and Adipose-Derived Mesenchymal Stromal/Stem Cells

Yuan Liu et al.

Summary: This review explores the tissue regeneration potential of EVs isolated from bone marrow and adipose tissue, the two most common clinical sources of adult MSCs, focusing on their angiogenic, osteogenic, and immunomodulatory potentials. Other important issues in the development of MSC-derived EV based therapies are also discussed.

A low-temperature-printed hierarchical porous sponge-like scaffold that promotes cell-material interaction and modulates paracrine activity of MSCs for vascularized bone regeneration

Meifei Lian et al.

Summary: The sponge-like scaffolds developed using low temperature deposition modeling (LDM) printing showed significant promotion in cellular behavior and paracrine secretion patterns of MSCs, enhancing multiple regenerative processes such as immunomodulation, angiogenesis, and osteogenesis. This suggests potential applications in tissue engineering and tissue regeneration enhancement through optimization of biomaterial properties to direct the paracrine signaling of MSCs.

Bio-instructive hydrogel expands the paracrine potency of mesenchymal stem cells

Norman M. Drzeniek et al.

Summary: MSCs' therapeutic potential can be better maintained and directed by encapsulating them in a customizable COL-HA hydrogel, leading to enhanced secretion of therapeutic factors and increased angiogenic potential. The hydrogel combines bioactivity with injectability, on-demand polymerization, and tissue-specific elasticity, making it a promising candidate for successful MSC delivery in clinical applications.

Surfing the clinical trials of mesenchymal stem cell therapy in ischemic cardiomyopathy

Iman Razeghian-Jahromi et al.

Summary: Mesenchymal stem cell (MSC) therapy has shown positive outcomes in clinical trials for heart failure, including scar size reduction, reverse remodeling, and angiogenesis. However, there are still uncertainties regarding the optimal dose, route of administration, timing, and source of stem cells, which are limiting the routine use of MSC therapy in clinical practice.

New therapeutic approaches of mesenchymal stem cells-derived exosomes

Jana Janockova et al.

Summary: Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are shown to have great potential in treating diseases through the secretion of exosomes, which are believed to be more effective than the cells themselves. Alternative approaches using MSC-derived exosomes offer promise in overcoming limitations in cell-based therapy. MSC-derived exosomes have significant therapeutic potential and are promising in regenerative medicine.
