Identification and Functional Characterization of Metabolites for Bone Mass in Peri- and Postmenopausal Chinese Women

Rui Gong et al.

Summary: This study identified 20 metabolites and a co-functional metabolite module (consisting of fatty acids) significantly associated with BMD variation, with dodecanoic acid (DA) causally decreasing total hip BMD in the identified module. In vivo experiments indicated that dietary supplementation with DA could promote bone loss and increase osteoblast and osteoclast numbers, especially at higher concentrations in vitro. This study sheds light on the potential importance of fatty acids, exemplified by DA, in regulating BMD and postmenopausal osteoporosis risk.
