Functional Traits Are Good Predictors of Tree Species Abundance Across 101 Subtropical Forest Species in China

Summary: The study found that tree functional traits and conspecific adult negative density dependence together explained 20% of the total variation in tree abundance. Specifically, specific leaf area (SLA) had a negative influence on tree abundance both directly and indirectly via conspecific adult negative density dependence. Leaf dry matter content (LDMC) and leaf N content (LNC) had indirect effects on abundance mediated by conspecific adult negative density dependence. Maximum electron transport rate (ETRmax) and leaf area (LA) had direct negative effects on tree abundance. Conspecific adult negative density dependence was negatively correlated with species abundance, indicating that abundant species are under stronger negative density dependence. Among the investigated traits, specific leaf area (SLA) contributed the most to the variation in conspecific adult negative density dependence and abundance. The findings of trait-conspecific adult negative density dependence-abundance relationships can improve our understanding of the determinants of species commonness and rarity in forests.
