The origin of Wxla provides new insights into the improvement of grain quality in rice

Hao Zhou et al.

Summary: The study investigated the genetic basis of taste and eating quality in rice varieties, identifying the Wx gene as a major factor affecting these traits. A novel waxy allele, Wx(la), derived from intragenic recombination, was found to confer transparent appearance and good eating quality to rice. The study provides insights into the evolution of the Wx locus and suggests potential strategies for molecular breeding to improve rice quality.

A rare Waxy allele coordinately improves rice eating and cooking quality and grain transparency

Changquan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study identified a rare Wx allele, Wx(mw), in rice that combines favorable amylose content, improved eating and cooking quality, and grain transparency. Phylogenetic analysis suggested that Wx(mw) may have derived from recombination between two important natural Wx alleles. Experimental validation showed that Wx(mw) can improve rice grain quality, especially in high-yielding japonica cultivars.

Genetic characterization and association mapping in near-isogenic lines of waxy maize using seed characteristics and SSR markers

Hae Ri Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the genetic diversity and relationships of waxy maize NILs, and identified molecular markers related to seed characteristics through association analysis. Results showed that SSR markers were associated with seed traits in the NILs and parental lines, demonstrating the utility of SSR analysis in studying population structure and association mapping.

Genomic Regions Involved in Differences in Eating and Cooking Quality Other than Wx and Alk Genes between indica and japonica Rice Cultivars

Kiyosumi Hori et al.

Summary: This study identified 112 QTLs affecting eating quality traits in rice, with some chromosome segments from japonica rice cultivar 'Koshihikari' consistently improving eating quality. Six QTLs were found to enhance whiteness and stickiness or reduce hardness of cooked grains over 3 years, and were not associated with agronomic traits. These QTLs may serve as novel genetic factors for improving eating quality in breeding programs for indica rice cultivars.

Breeding of High Cooking and Eating Quality in Rice by Marker-Assisted Backcrossing (MABc) Using KASP Markers

Me-Sun Kim et al.

Summary: The study utilized marker-assisted backcross (MABc) breeding program to develop rice varieties with low-amylose content, utilizing one parent with low amylose content and another high-quality variety. Trait markers for low-amylose content were identified through SNP mapping, facilitating the backcross process. The selected BC2F2 lines confirmed by molecular markers can be used in subsequent breeding of high-quality rice for cooking and eating.

Improving rice eating and cooking quality by coordinated expression of the major starch synthesis-related genes, SSII and Wx, in endosperm

Lichun Huang et al.

Summary: Coordinated regulation of amylose and amylopectin synthesis via manipulation of SSII-2, SSII-3 and Wx expression in endosperm can improve rice eating and cooking quality. SSII-2 plays a crucial role in regulating amylopectin biosynthesis and amylose content in rice endosperm, particularly when the activity of SSII-3 is low or lacking.
