Annual dynamics of antimicrobials and resistance determinants in flocculent and aerobic granular sludge treatment systems

Rebeca Pallares-Vega et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and removal patterns of antimicrobial agents, antibiotic resistance genes, and E. coli in wastewater treatment plants. The results showed that wastewater treatment reduced the abundance of genes and E. coli, while partially removing antimicrobial agents, with some still detectable after treatment and accumulating in biosolids. Irrespective of the type of sludge treatment, the removal of genes was significantly reduced with increasing hydraulic loads caused by rainfall, and slightly decreased with increasing turbidity.

Plasmid- and strain-specific factors drive variation in ESBL-plasmid spread in vitro and in vivo

Fabienne Benz et al.

Summary: This study found that clinical Escherichia coli strains associated with ESBL-producing plasmids could conjugate with other E. coli and Salmonella strains in the absence of antibiotics, with transconjugant frequencies influenced by plasmid properties, donor and recipient strains, as well as the presence of transfer genes on ESBL-plasmids and plasmid incompatibility. The results suggest that plasmid spread in the complex gut environment of animals and humans can be predicted based on in vitro testing and genetic data.
