Pathogenicity of a Vibrio owensii strain isolated from Fenneropenaeus chinensis carrying pirAB genes and causing AHPND

Fei Liu et al.

Summary: A newly emerged shrimp disease, acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND), has been causing great economic losses in the shrimp farming industry, with the causing agent Vibrio parahaemolyticus carrying toxin genes pirA and pirB. The isolated Vibrio owensii strain FcYS03 from Chinese shrimp was found to cause AHPND in both Fenneropenaeus chinensis and Penaeus vannamei, with pathogenicity showing temperature and salinity dependence. Genome sequence analysis revealed a segmental rearrangement in the plasmid of FcYS03, with transposon Tn903 potentially related to the transfer of toxin genes among bacteria. This study provides valuable insights for understanding and preventing AHPND in shrimp aquaculture.

Screening of bacterial pathogens associated with mass summer mortality of the Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, in China

Hebing Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pathogenic factors associated with mass summer mortality of Pacific oysters, identifying several Vibrio species as pathogens affecting oysters. Experimental challenge trials revealed different levels of pathogenicity among the Vibrio strains, with V. alginolyticus exerting the highest pathogenicity. These findings provide valuable information for disease surveillance in oyster aquaculture.
