Reduced competence to arboviruses following the sustainable invasion of Wolbachia into native Aedes aegypti from Southeastern Brazil

Summary: Field release of Wolbachia-infected Aedes aegypti has proven to be an effective method for managing the transmission of dengue, Zika, and chikungunya viruses in endemic areas worldwide. A proof-of-concept field trial conducted in a small community in Niteroi, Brazil, demonstrated successful invasion and establishment of Wolbachia in the territory, with stable high infection rates. The study also showed that resistance to dengue and Zika viruses was maintained after adaptation to the natural environment in Southeastern Brazil.
