Integrated Phenotypic-Genotypic Analysis of Candidate ProbioticWeissella Cibaria Strains Isolated from Dairy Cows in Kuwait

Vania Patrone et al.

Summary: Probiotics, especially the Weissella genus, show potential for controlling intestinal infections in livestock. Two Weissella cibaria strains isolated from cows in Kuwait exhibited strong growth under acidic conditions and bile salts, along with adhesion properties to host cells and inhibitory effects on E. coli and S. enterica due to their low pH supernatants. Genetic analysis revealed genes related to metabolism and stress responses, indicating adaptation to the gastrointestinal environment. Strain SP19 showed promising probiotic properties and genetic markers, making it a candidate for further investigation in livestock use.
