A single semi-analytical algorithm to retrieve chlorophyll-a concentration in oligo-to-hypereutrophic waters of a tropical reservoir cascade

Luiz Rotta et al.

Summary: This study proposes a method to map the spatial distribution patterns of Chl-a levels in reservoirs using remote sensing images calibrated based on absorption coefficients, providing relatively high accuracy Chl-a maps that can be incorporated into the operational monitoring system of the TRCS at a low cost to provide timely information for reservoir managers.

Water quality assessment of the Ganges River during COVID-19 lockdown

P. R. Muduli et al.

Summary: The assessment of Ganges River water quality during the nationwide pandemic lockdown showed improvements in water quality at specific locations, with only one site meeting drinking water standards. The halt in pilgrimage activities during the lockdown led to a decrease in turbidity, and reductions in indicators of organic pollution suggest reasons behind the water quality improvements. Regular monitoring of Ganges water quality using satellite data is crucial to understanding anthropogenic impacts as India continues to reopen amidst the pandemic.

Atmospheric and sunglint correction for retrieving chlorophyll-a in a productive tropical estuarine-lagoon system using Sentinel-2 MSI imagery

Matheus Henrique Tavares et al.

Summary: Remote monitoring of chlorophyll-a (chla) is widely used for assessing the trophic state of water bodies, but the algorithms applied in different optical water types still face uncertainties. The study evaluated state-of-the-art atmospheric correction and chla algorithms using Sentinel-2 MSI imagery in a tropical system, highlighting the importance of addressing atmospheric and adjacency effects. The research suggests the need to explore suitable combinations of AC + chla algorithms for different optical water types to enable global-scale retrievals of chlorophyll-a pigment using medium-resolution sensors.

Assessing land use and land cover change in Los Molinos reservoir watershed and the effect on the reservoir water quality

Matias Bonansea et al.

Summary: Understanding and modelling land use and land cover change is crucial for environmental management, as human activities can have negative effects on freshwater resources. Remote sensing and GIS play a key role in assessing the drivers of LULC change and its impact on lake and reservoir water quality. This study investigated the dynamics of LULC change in the Los Molinos watershed, finding a significant increase in urbanization and agricultural activities, leading to degradation of water quality in the reservoir. Urbanization within the 1 km buffer zone from the reservoir shore increased at an annual rate of 18.02% during 2010-2020, contributing to the deterioration of water quality.
